“So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered them, ‘Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot help speaking of what we have seen and heard.’” Acts 4:20
My friends, this is not simply a story about something that happened a couple thousand years ago. There are numerous places in the world where the government has said precisely the same thing to the Christians in their country.
I have the opportunity to go to one this summer to do precisely what Peter and John did: continue to proclaim the gospel despite opposition from the authorities. I’ll be going with a small group of brothers to pray with and minister to the persecuted and hiding Christians in this particular country, hopefully finding ways to minister more extensively there in the future.
My reason for writing is to ask for your prayers. We still serve the God who has said to us, “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” So, will you pray with me? Here are my main requests:
- Safety: for the men going with us – in travel and the time we spend in-country; for the believers we will visit – if we are followed by plainclothes government officials the believers who accept us in may be persecuted later; for our local guide and his family – he has a warrant out for his arrest and his family has been suffering persecution for their faith
- Encouragement: for the Christians we will visit – they are (with good reason) scared, but desire to be faithful to the gospel and to their Savior, so pray that we can strengthen and encourage them; for those of us going – that we might take joy in nothing so much as being faithful in any circumstances
- Opportunities: to pray – with the church and with nonbelievers; to be witnesses – despite the fact that it is illegal to evangelize, pray that we might have opportunities to shine the light of the gospel to set free those who are captive in the dark; to preach – of course, if simply going from home to Christian home is difficult, it goes without saying that this will be impossible apart from the intervention of Christ, but pray that we might have opportunities to do so and that the Word would be fruitful!
I’ve intentionally been vague about the location, but if you would like more information feel free to contact me. If the Lord leads you to participate in sending the gospel financially I can provide the forms to do that as well. I would much rather have your prayers than your money, though. Money is useful, yes…but it is infinitely secondary to the power to be had when bringing requests into the very presence of the eternal Creator-God.
Thank you, my dear brothers and sisters! May the Lord bless you much, and give you comfort and peace in the knowledge of His love for you.
